WWOOF is an amazing opportunity to learn new skills, make friends, and experience daily life on a farm. Staying with people you’ve never met can also feel a little intimidating at first. A little preparation can help you step outside your comfort zone with confidence.
Before your visit
- Know yourself. Think about your expectations, comfort level, and personal limits.
- Read host profiles carefully. Review the farm, read WWOOFer reviews, look at accommodation photos, activities and location.
- Talk before you confirm. Schedule a phone or video call with your host to get to know each other.
- Ask plenty of questions. Who will be on the farm? Will you have a private or shared room? What will your daily routine, meals, and farm activities look like? What should you bring?
- Communicate your needs. Let your host know about any specific needs, boundaries, or goals for your visit.
- Learn about the area. Local customs and ways of life may be different from your own.
- Share your plans. Give a friend or family member your location, dates, host information, and travel plans.
- Know your transportation options. If you don’t have your own vehicle, research nearby public or private transportation.
- Have a backup plan. Keep some extra money available for unexpected transportation or accommodations.
- Consider insurance. Medical and travel insurance can help with unexpected illness or injury. Learn more about insurance.
During your stay
- Give yourself time to adjust. Feeling a little awkward when you first arrive is normal!
- Keep communicating. Ask questions when you’re unsure about an activity, expectation, or situation.
- Speak up about concerns. When appropriate, talk with your host, another WWOOFer, or someone else on the farm. Sometimes cultural or communication differences can lead to misunderstandings.
- Stay connected. Check in with friends or family, especially when staying in a rural or remote area.
- Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, take your concerns seriously.
If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable
- Talk to someone if you feel comfortable doing so.
- End your stay if needed. You are never obligated to continue a WWOOF visit if you feel unsafe.
- In an emergency, contact local emergency services or police.
