Future Farmer Katelyn’s Story

From Future Farmer to Kick-Ass Farmer:
How WWOOF helped kick-start a career in agriculture

Two years ago, Katelyn was selected as a WWOOF Future Farmer grant recipient. She found herself on a draft animal powered farm in Vermont and it changed her life forever.

“The month-long WWOOF trip I took was my way to see if this is the direction I wanted to take with my life – and it was a resounding ‘Yes!’”

The result?

Katelyn is now a full-time farmer. The skills and experience she gained WWOOFing in Vermont, and later on a goat farm in Washington, helped her obtain a salaried position as herd manager for a Colorado non-profit organization focused on sustainable agriculture education and securing food donations for the local community.

Katelyn became another of the WWOOF-inspired young farmers that our planet desperately needs.

The WWOOF-USA Future Farmers Grant awards grants to individuals like Katelyn who are committed to going into farming as a career. With the average age of a US farmer nearing 60, WWOOF is working to bridge that generational gap and inspire the next generation of farmers.
