It was the educational aspect of WWOOF that first inspired Future Farmer grant recipient Natalie to give farming a try.
“I had a really specific skill I wanted to learn and only had a week available – so it worked perfectly to go WWOOFing to do that.”
While an education in farming drew her in, it was the community of people she met along the way that got her hooked on sustainable agriculture. The farming experiences she gathered while WWOOFing in Massachusetts and Hawaii solidified her own dream of having a farm.
“I am working towards having my own farm, even more so after WWOOFing. Getting into the farming community is unlike any industry I’ve had any experience with – people are open and supportive, the exchanging of ideas with people … I want to continue to be a part of that environment.”
The WWOOF-USA Future Farmers Grant awards grants to individuals like Natalie who are committed to going into farming as a career. With the average age of a US farmer nearing 60, WWOOF is working to bridge that generational gap and inspire the next generation of farmers. We’re asking for your help so we can provide even more Future Farmer Grants in 2023.
Your donation will directly fund the 2023 Future Farmer Program. Every donation WWOOF receives makes a difference and provides more life-changing opportunities for Future Farmers.
